Are toilets in Japan Western-style or squat-style?

City centers, tourist areas, stations, and shopping facilities are almost all Western-style with heated washlet seats. Older facilities in rural areas and some parks may still have squat-style toilets.

For a squat toilet, face the hooded/curved end of the fixture while you squat — it's easy to get backwards the first time.

Many multi-stall restrooms label each stall "Western-style" or "Japanese-style" on the door, so check the sign if you have a choice.
