I don't understand how unmanned (self) check-in works

A growing number of capsule hotels and business hotels use touch-panel kiosks or your phone to complete check-in without staff. If the kiosk can scan your passport and take a card payment, it usually takes just a few minutes.

The kiosk typically has you scan your passport, or read a QR code, to pull up your reservation.

Payment is usually completed on the spot by credit card; some properties don't take cash at all.

Room keys are often a PIN code or a smart lock — don't lose the number you're given or the confirmation email.

Most properties still have a phone or intercom connecting you to staff if you get stuck.
