The rules on photos, tripods, and eating at tourist sites are confusing

Photographing the inside of main halls, statues, and artwork is often banned; outdoor grounds are usually fine to shoot, but tripods or commercial photography often require permission. Even without a sign, it's safest to avoid it if you don't see locals doing it.

Even where there's no "no photos" sign, avoid shooting during an active religious ceremony, or in a way that puts other worshippers in your frame without their consent.

Eating and drinking on the grounds is banned at many shrines and temples, so save food for outside the grounds or a designated rest area.
