Can tourists use PayPay or other QR code payment apps in Japan?
Most Japanese QR payment apps like PayPay are not directly usable by short-term tourists without a Japanese bank account, but international options like Alipay+ and WeChat Pay work at many of the same stores if you already have those apps set up.
QR code payment is extremely common in Japan, especially at small restaurants, convenience stores, and markets that don't accept foreign credit cards.
PayPay, the most widely used Japanese app, generally requires a Japanese phone number and bank account or card to sign up, which makes it impractical to set up just for a short trip.
If you already use Alipay+ or WeChat Pay in your home country, check before your trip whether your version supports overseas use in Japan — many major chains now accept these directly.
A mobile connection (see the eSIM/pocket WiFi guide) is required either way, since QR payment apps need internet access to complete a transaction.
