How do I withdraw cash from an ATM with a foreign card in Japan?
7-Eleven (Seven Bank) ATMs and Japan Post Bank ATMs are the most reliable for foreign Visa/Mastercard/UnionPay/AmEx cards, and both offer English-language screens.
Not all ATMs in Japan accept foreign-issued cards — many bank ATMs are domestic-only. Seven Bank ATMs (inside every 7-Eleven) and Japan Post Bank ATMs are the two most dependable options nationwide.
Look for the English guidance button when you insert your card. Your home bank will usually charge a foreign transaction fee on top of any ATM fee, so withdrawing larger amounts less often can reduce total fees.
A prepaid travel card loaded before your trip can be a lower-fee alternative to repeated ATM withdrawals.
